iPhone - The first true convergence device
So last week in the US I finally got my iPhone which I, purely for educational purposes, activated, jailbreaked and unlocked. It did work like a charm. The first time around it took me a little longer, the second time (why, a second time? for fun of course) the whole process including downgrade and update took me about 45 minutes.
Why would someone want to hack it? The third party apps of course. My recommendation: Installer.app is just great since it allows you to install many third party apps with OTA downloads of the installation packages and everything comes in a very nice package catalogue.
Why would someone want to unlock it? Probably because they are already tied into a contract with a different provider and don’t want to pay double. The other reason for unlocking it? The reason would probably be the money saving. £65 or $130 by buying it in the US compared to the UK price.
So why does everyone love the iPhone? True, it is somewhat of a fashion device, but that is true for every Apple product. I believe I’m not alone saying that the real reason is that the one device does it all. I don’t have to bring my iPod Video and my N95 everywhere I go or pre-N95, my iPod Video, my digi cam and my cell phone. My iPhone does everything, hey it does more than I would want to do and everything syncs so nicely with my MacBook Pro. In the words of Eric Cartman: “Sweeet.”
Now, what hardware elements to improve in the iPhone 2nd Generation (or later)?
- # Better camera, at least 5 megapixel (really don’t get it why the 1st Gen has only a 2mp camera)
- # 3G
- # WiFi 802.11n
- # GPS (which works as well as the Blackberry one not as poorly as the N95 one)
What to improve software-wise?
- # Full syncing via Bluetooth!! (at the moment you can’t do any BT syncing, what’s that about??)
- # More BT functionality in general, e.g. send photos/files etc.
- # Open up to third party apps (I know the SDK comes out early 2008. Still doesn’t mean that anyone can dev.)
- # SMS bug fix (will write a separate post on this)
