Ubuntu Linux on a MacBook Pro (BootCamp)

Last weekend I finally took some time to load up a great Linux build, namely Ubuntu (desktop edition), onto a partition on my MBP that I created using BootCamp.

Partitioning
Well, let us say I initiated the partitioning using Bootcamp. Since it prepares a FAT32 partition alongside the HFS partition I had to play around a little with the Ubuntu partition manager to get that partition deleted and then set up for the Ubuntu installation with an EXT3 and a swap partition.

Installation
Easy peasy, just follow the dialogue.

The only tweak necessary - Screen Resolution
This required a little fine tuning. The trick was done by downloading the third party driver by the manufacturer ATI, subsequent activation of that package and then setting the display type to LCD Panel and making sure to activate the “Widescreen” checkbox, then changing the screen resolution to 1440×990.

How do I like the Ubuntu?
Compared to once of the early builds of Suse back in the days of, what was it, 1999 I believe, Linux sure has come a long way in terms of usability. Great experience and it is even quite a little faster than Mac OSX.
