Looks like TUAW saved me some of the write-up but came to a more open or be it even different conclusion. While all their considerations are true and make sense the conclusion is driven by personal usage. http://i.tuaw.com/2011/03/06/iphone-4-personal-hotspot-wi-fi-only-ipad-possible-but-wit/

On my iPad 1 I used the 3G connection under half a dozen times in a year.

The location features were much more commonly used but I never needed a very accurate positioning, that’s what my iPhone is for. Just an easy narrowing down on the neighbourhood was enough for me.

In the UK I can use all BT/FON wifi hotspots as I share my home connection via a FON router (cheaper than the extra cost for an iPad 2 with 3G).

When travelling I mostly use the iPad for browsing at a hotel or family/friend’s house thus not needing a 3G connection.

With home and travel web usage done over wifi most of the time, the battery use issue does not apply for me.

Hence in conclusion I am considering at the moment not getting the 3G version. I would do so for the only reason the article author intends to: just in case I ever needed it. This was the reason getting the 3G version in the first place and as it turned out I used it on a handful occasions, occasions that I easily could have done without. For those rare occasions using the hotspot function of a smartphone will do just as fine.

Agreed. In some cases you may think you NEED to access the internet, but I’m sure I will find in those situations that I don’t really need to, but just would like to access it. Also now with personal hotspot on the iPhone in addition to my Android’s hotspot feature, I can still get access on the iPad.

I had exactly the same question, however, the 3G version is the only version with GPS built in.

Is that something you would not consider as another reason for getting the 3G one?

I considered that aspect as well and the Wifi-only version still lets you locate yourself based on WiFi networks in your proximity. During my year of using the first iPad that was with 3G I never needed to get a more accurate location and for that matter I actually always used my iPhone anyway.
